Unser Verhältnis zu den Märchen der Brüder Grimm ist an eine bestimmte, uns von Kindheit an geläufige Wortgestalt gebunden, weshalb es fast unvermeidlich zu einer Störung dieses Verhältnisses führt, von Textvorläufern, Varianten, Urfassungen zu erfahren, die vom Bekannten und Altvertrauten abweichen. Es gibt die - 1975 von Heinz Rölleke herausgegebene - Älteste Märchensammlung der Brüder Grimm, daneben die um 1947 von Friedrich Panzer besorgte Neuherausgabe der beiden Erstdruckbände von 1812 und 1815 der er den Untertitel Vollständige Ausgabe in der Urfassung mitgab. Gegen die Bezeichnung Urfassung haben sich seither kritische Stimmen erhoben. Da die Märchen bis dahin immer nur mündlich überliefert worden waren, hatten sie zweifellos vor der ersten Drucklegung schon viele Veränderungen erfahren: wie die wahre Urfassung aussah, wird sich nie mehr feststellen lassen. Dagegen können wir genau verfolgen, was mit der Erstdruckfassung geschehen ist und wie es möglic c war, dass sie wie eine archäologische Tiefenschicht unter den von Wilhelm Grimm bearbeiteten Wiederauflagen - von 1819 bis 1857 - verschwinden konnte. Panzer fiel hier in der Tat die Rolle eines Archäologen und Neuentdeckers zu. Und da sich die späteren, oft erheblich veränderten Fassungen so tief in das allgemeine Bewusstsein eingegraben haben, besteht selbst heute noch die Gefahr, dass die Erstdrucktexte wieder von ihnen zugedeckt werden und in Vergessenheit geraten. Sie wieder greifbar zu machen und den Dialog von Erstdruck und Spätfassung nicht erneut abreißen zu lassen, ist das Ziel dieser Ausgabe.Jacob Grimm wurde 1785 in Hanau geboren. Er studierte in Marburg und Paris. Der Germanist arbeitete als Professor in Göttingen, wurde jedoch als Mitverfasser des politischen Protestes der Göttinger Sieben von seinem Amt enthoben. 1841 holte der preußische König Friedrich Wilhelm IV. ihn und seinen Bruder Wilhelm Karl Grimm (1786-1863) als Mitglieder an die Akademie der Wissenschaften nach Berlin. Mit seinen auf eingehender Quellenforschung beruhenden Werken Deutsche Grammatik und Geschichte der deutschen Sprache legte Jacob Grimm die Grundlage der Germanistik. Er bearbeitete die ersten Bände des von ihm und Wilhelm Grimm begründeten Deutschen Wörterbuchs. Gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder und K. Lachmann gilt Jacob Grimm als der eigentliche Begründer der deutschen Philologie. Jacob Ludwig Carl und Wilhelm Karl Grimm sind die bekannten Herausgeber der "Kinder- und Hausmärchen". Jacob Grimm starb 1863 in Berlin.Wilhelm Grimm, geb. am 24. Februar 1786 in Hanau, gestorben am 16. Dezember 1859 in Berlin, lehrte in den 1830er Jahren in Göttingen, war Mitglieder der Göttinger Sieben und ab 1841 der Preußischen Akademie der Künste in Berlin. Gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Jacob arbeitete er an den "Kinder- und Hausmärchen", den "Sagen" und vor allem am "Deutschen Wörterbuch", das ab 1854 entstand.
