As a gallerist, Copley established a powerful presence for Surrealism on the West Coast, exhibiting René Magritte, Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy, Joseph Co…rnell and Man Ray, before deciding, in 1947, to become a painter himself. He then moved to Paris, where he developed his own unmistakable style, a style which has come to be recognized as the native link between Surrealism and Pop art. In his emphasis on bold wavy outline and occasional use of text, Copley is now also considered a forerunner of the graffiti art practiced by the likes of Keith Haring. This important monograph reproduces a broad selection of Copley's paintings, inspired by everyday American circumstances: his cowboys and pin-up girls, his erotic and pornographic fantasies and his set pieces from everyday life. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- En tant que galeriste, Copley a établi une présence puissante pour le surréalisme sur la côte Ouest, exposant René Magritte, Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy, Joseph Cornell et Man Ray, avant de décider, en 1947, de devenir lui-même peintre. Richly illustrated with 70 color plates, this volume surveys her oeuvre from the 90s to the 2010s and contains contributions by a number of scholars and artists. Hardcover, 150pgs. Binding solid and square.… Interior clean and unmarked. Pictorial boards in excellent shape with minor rubbing and scuffing visible only in bright light, and minor shelf wear to the edges and corners, most noticeably two very minimally bumped areas, one at the bottom right corner of the back panel and also slightly at the top edge of the spine. Embossed seal to front free endpaper from art gallery from which this book came. Altogether an excellent copy.
