Fritz Wilhelm Winckel (June 20, 1907 in Bregenz August 13, 2000 in Goslar) was an Austro-German acoustician and one of the pioneers of electronic music. From 1927 to 1932 Winckel studied telecommunications technology and acoustics at the Technical University of Berlin-Charlottenburg. He initially worked in the field of television technology. After 1932, together with Walther Nernst, he developed the Neo-Bechstein grand piano, an electro-mechanical musical instrument. From 1937 to 1945 he worked for the Siemens aircraft factory. After 1945 he studied physics with István Szabó and worked in the field of experimental voice and language research, with a particular interest in the analysis of the human singing voice. In 1951 his habilitation thesis on acoustic structural analyzes of language and music was published. Since 1954 he has been in charge of the degree course for qualified sound engineers, which he initiated and was implemented in cooperation between the Technical University and the Hochschule für Musik. At the end of the 1950s, alongside Boris Blacher, he was one of the founders of the Working Group for Electronic Music, which was based in the Studio for Electronic Music he founded in 1953 at the Technical University. The spherical auditorium designed by Karlheinz Stockhausen for the 1969-70 Osaka World Expo was also developed here. Winckel studierte von 1927 bis 1932 an der Technischen Hochschule zu Berlin Fernmeldetechnik und Akustik. Er arbeitete zunächst auf dem Gebiet der Fernsehtechnik. Nach 1932 entwickelte er mit Walther Nernst den Neo-Bechstein-Flügel, ein elektro-mechanisches Musikinstrument. Von 1937 bis 1945 arbeitete er für das Siemens-Luftfahrtgerätewerk. Nach 1945 studierte er bei István Szabó Physik und arbeitete auf dem Gebiet der experimentellen Stimm- und Sprachforschung, wobei er sich besonders für die Analyse der menschlichen Gesangsstimme interessierte. 1951 erschien seine Habilitationsschrift über Akustische Strukturanalysen von Sprache und Musik. Seit 1954 betreute er den auf sein Betreiben entstandenen und in Zusammenarbeit zwischen Technischer Universität und der Hochschule für Musik Berlin realisierten Studiengang für Diplom-Tonmeister. Ende der 1950er Jahre gehörte er neben Boris Blacher, Rüdiger Rüfer und Manfred Krause zu den Begründern des Arbeitskreises für Elektronische Musik, der im 1953 von ihm begründeten Studio für elektronische Musik der Technischen Universität angesiedelt war.[1] Hier wurde auch das von Karlheinz Stockhausen für die Weltausstellung in Osaka 196970 konzipierte Kugel-Auditorium entwickelt.
