Sono raccolti sette saggi, in buona parte tradotti dal tedesco e risalenti agli anni Ottanta e Novanta. Viene studiato l'influsso che Leon Battista Alberti ebbe sui più importanti architetti centro-italiani della seconda metà del Quattrocento: Bernardo Rossellino, Francesco del Borgo, Giuliano da Sangallo, Baccio Pontelli e altri. Bramante è però l'unico capace di appropriarsi interamente dell'eredità di Alberti, anticipando già nelle sue opere lombarde il culmine del Rinascimento della Roma cinquecentesca.
