Inhoudelijk past dit binnen de anti-katholieke polemiek van de late 16e en vroege 17e eeuw in de Lage Landen. Dichter, rederijker, chroniqueur en propagandist Jan Fruytiers behoorde tot de bekende dichters van de tweede helft van de 16e eeuw. Hij was een fervent verdediger van de Reformatie en vluchtte vermoedelijk vanuit de Zuidelijke Nederlanden naar het Noorden. Zijn verblijf wordt vermeld in Leiden in 1559 en in Antwerpen in 1561. Tijdens de gouverneurschap van Alva verbleef Fruytiers in ballingschap, onder andere in Oost-Friesland waar hij getuige was van de Allerheiligenvloed van 1570. Na de opmars van de Opstand keerde hij terug naar Holland en was hij ooggetuige van het Beleg en Ontzet van Leiden. Hij vertelde dit in zijn geschiedkundige werk, wat getuigt van zijn betrokkenheid bij belangrijke gebeurtenissen in de Tachtigjarige Oorlog.Er is geen bewijs dat Jan de Witte / Jean le Blancq een echt bestaand figuur was. In deze context dient Jan de Witte vooral als symbolisch of satirisch personage, geplaatst tegen de achtergrond van religieuze en politieke polemiek. Hij fungeert als toonbeeld van de misstanden of hypocrisie binnen de katholieke kerk.Het Papen-Apen spel is een satirische en kritisch pamflet tegen de katholieke misstanden. De ondertitel geeft aan dat het werk bestaat uit meerdere onderdelen: 1) Een verklaring van het "duyster papen woordt mis" en hoe ver het afstaat van het avondmaal zoals door Christus ingesteld. 2) Een helder bewijs dat de verdiensten van de mis, aflaten van de paus en dergelijke, slechts menselijke verzinsels zijn. 3) Een uiteenzetting van hoe langdurig pausen hoop met allerlei feesten, kermissen en Lichtmis wordt voorgesteld van Kerstmis tot Hemelvaart.Dit werk past in de traditie van de reformatorische propaganda in de Lage Landen tijdens de Tachtigjarige Oorlog en Reformatie. Pamfletten als deze waren bedoeld om kritiek te uiten op de katholieke kerk en haar rituelen, vaak op scherpe en beeldende wijzebijvoorbeeld door satire of het gebruik van krachtige metaforen en liederen om brede lagen van de bevolking te bereiken.Aert Meuris, Papestraat Den Haag was een beroemde drukker. Actief als uitgever/boekverkoper (en vermoedelijk drukker) in Den Haag vanaf 1609 tot zeker 1638; later ook actief in de Venestraat (16411642). Zijn winkeladres werd op titelpagina's vermeld als "inde Papestraet, in den (Beslagen) Bybel" het huis?/uithangteken van zijn zaak. Meuris trad op in de voorhoede van de Haagse boekhandel. In 1619 vroeg hij samen met landsdrukker Hillebrant van Wouw het privilege aan om de stukken van de Nationale Synode van Dordrecht te mogen drukken; het octrooi ging uiteindelijk naar een Dordtse drukker. .
