Aggiungi al carrelloImportant collection of sources for the biography of Desiderius Erasmus (1469-1536), put together and edited by Petrus Scriverius on the basis of the 1607 edition by Merula of the Compendium vitae, including a number of new sources and four hitherto unpublished letters by Erasmus. The humanist and independent scholar Petrus Scriverius (1576-1660) worked in Leiden outside the University, but he was in continuous contact with the most famous Leiden professors. Scriverius added commentaries and connecting texts by which the collection gained weight as materials for Erasmus' biography. Also through the later editions, edited by Thysius, and published by Joannes Maire in 1642 and 1649, the collection became very influential regarding Erasmus' "image" before the first critical biography of Erasmus was published by Joannes Clericus in 1705.With a few (near-contemporary?) manuscript annotations and markings in the margins. The vellum and the title page are slightly (dust) soiled, the pastedowns have detached from the inside of the boards and the front pastedown is lacking the upper outer corner, the bottom outer corner of leaf C6 is sligthly damaged (not affecting the text), some occasional very slight foxing. Otherwise in good condition.l Knaake II, 355a; STCN 832265039; Tuynman, 'Petrus Scriverius (1576-1660)', in: Quaerendo, 7 (1977), pp. 4-45, esp. 23-4; USTC 1027478; Vander Haeghen 182. Contemporary vellum, sewn on 3 vellum tapes laced through the joints, with the manuscript title on the spine, red edges. With a woodcut printer's device on the title page, a woodcut roundel with portrait of Erasmus on leaf 5, a divisional title page for Erasmus' letters, and a few woodcut decorated initials. Pages: [24], 286, [2 blank].

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition (first issue), in the original Latin, of a history of Batavia, the Latin name for the Low Countries, though the subtitle here restricts it to the northern territories that belonged to the young Dutch Republic: the Betuwe, Holland, Zeeland, Friesland, Utrecht (province) and Gelderland. It contains works by several different authors, opening with a brief letter by the compiler, the Dutch historian Petrus Scriverius (1576-1660), who wrote several historical works on the Low Countries. The first section is a history of Batavia, containing two works by Gerardus Noviomagus, also known as Gerardus Geldenhouwer (1482-1542). Next come two treatises dealing with the origin of the Batavians and other matters, written by Cornelius Aurelius (ca. 1460-1531), best known for his Divisiekroniek. It is followed by some letters by various authors, including one by Desiderius Erasmus, and some texts by Adrianus Barlandus (1486-1538). Also included is a list of important rulers of the Low Countries, with many woodcut portraits. The book closes with Henrik Aquilius's Compendium chronici Gelriae, providing a history of Gelderland and including geographic notes by Ortelius. Copy from the Duke de La Force. Text-leaves with occasional small black spots, otherwise in good condition. Binding worn along the extremities, spine damaged, especially at the head and foot, front hinge cracked.l Haitsma Mulier & V.d. Lem 436b; Rahir 39; STCN 190152141; Willems 57. With a woodcut printer's device on the title page, a woodcut initial, and many woodcut illustrations in the text. Pages: [8], 232, 56 184, 40 pp.

Aggiungi al carrelloVellum. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. Reprint. 480, 95pp. 1626. 32mo.sized. Elzevir, Leiden. Bound in contemporary vellum with the titles neatly written in ink (a long time ago) to the spine and the 3 letter initials of a former owner in ink to the vellum on the front board. Has endpapers. Engraved title page. The engraved title page has very neat, ancient paper repairs to the versos of both the leading edge and the tail - now all very toned in and hardly noticeable. A stain with tidemarks to the lower corners of the first 80 pages - increasingly faint and never particularly heavy. Most of the textblock remains very clean. The rear board largely detached from the spine - holding at the head only, but being as it is bound in the softer vellum is surprisingly not all that noticeable and hardly detracts from the generally well preserved vellum binding. Some dust soiling to the vellum binding. A very good, generally well preserved copy of a charming book.
