One folding colour woodblock, eighteen full page colour woodblock illustrations, one heightened with silver, 2 pages calligraphy, 10 folded leaves, original wrappers with string ties, decorative upper cover titled in Japanese and the lower in English. Some light browning and soiling particularly on upper margins, covers a little soiled and marked. Stamp of Wm. Allen and Co. Ltd, Design Paper Manufacturers, Nottingham inside lower wrapper. A good copy of a delightful book. Volume 31 of the famous and beautifully produced Japanese design journal published between 1902 and 1906. The publication was edited by the artist and illustrator Furuya K?rin (1875-1910) and overseen by the renowned designer Kamisaka Sekka (1866-1942). This volume contains hardly any text, but includes 19 exquisite designs (all of them in colour, including 1 fold out print), characteristic of the magazine's blending of Japanese traditional aesthetics with modern printing techniques. Published at a time when the European enthusiasm for Japonisme was still at its height, the journal, with its English title printed on the back, was clearly designed to appeal to a western as well as a Japanese audience.
