Nach einem Überblick über Ansätze zur globalen Beschreibung von Sprachkompetenz folgt eine Analyse der Probleme, die bei der Konstruktion von solchen Sprachkompetenztests auftreten. Die Ergebnisse einer empirischen Untersuchung, an der über 1000 österreichische Schülerinnen und Schüler an 15 Allgemeinbildenden Höheren Schulen teilnahmen, geben eine erste Antwort auf die Frage der Lernbarkeit der beiden Sprachen und führen zu einer Skizze für vor allem sprachtesttheoretische Forschungsprojekte, deren Durchführung zur Untersuchung der Lernbarkeit nicht nur von Englisch und Französisch, sondern auch anderer Fremdsprachen notwendig ist.
