"Hermann von Wissmann (18531905) war ein deutsche…r Offizier, Afrikaforscher und Kolonialgouverneur. Er gilt als maßgeblicher Akteur bei der gewaltsamen Eroberung und Unterwerfung des späteren "Deutsch-Ostafrika" (heute Tansania, Ruanda und Burundi). Wissmann wurde 1888 vom Reichskanzler Otto von Bismarck als Reichskommissar eingesetzt, um den sogenannten "Araber-Aufstand" (den antikolonialen Widerstand der ostafrikanischen Küstenbevölkerung) niederzuschlagen. Dafür stellte er die sogenannte "Wissmanntruppe" auf, eine Söldnertruppe, die überwiegend aus afrikanischen Soldaten unter deutschem Kommando bestand. Die Niederschlagung des Widerstands war von extremer Härte und massiver Gewalt gegen die indigene Bevölkerung geprägt. Wissmann ging mit gezielter "Verbrannte-Erde-Taktik" vor, bei der ganze Regionen verwüstet, Siedlungen niedergebrannt, Ernten vernichtet und die Lebensgrundlagen der Einheimischen zerstört wurden. Historikern zufolge fielen diesen Feldzügen weit über 100.000 Menschen zum Opfer, viele starben an den Folgen von Hunger und Vertreibung. Während Wissmann im Kaiserreich als "Afrika-Pionier" gefeiert wurde, wird sein Wirken heute in der modernen Geschichtswissenschaft als zentraler Teil der kolonialen Gewaltverbrechen gewertet. Ehemalige deutsche Entwicklungsminister stuften Offiziere wie ihn als Kriegsverbrecher ein. Sein Erbe ist daher stark umstritten: Denkmäler, die an ihn erinnerten - wie jenes in Hamburg - wurden bereits in früheren Jahrzehnten infolge von Protesten gestürzt und in Museen verlagert. Auch in Städten wie Berlin oder Stuttgart wurden ehemals nach ihm benannte Straßen aufgrund seiner Rolle bei den Kolonialverbrechen umbenannt" .
