It is a glimpse into a little-known realm of Mexican folk art by a sensitive collector who also, to quote an oft-used phrase, feels Mexico in his bones. In the Introduction the author gives us useful background material to his subject, such as accounts of Mexican miniaturists in colonial times, and the recurrence of miniature paintings in many forms of Mexican art, from the religious retablo to the Revolutionary mural. Charpenel raises, without completely resolving, the much-discussed question of the Mexican's tendency toward the minuscular. Psychologists, sociologists, and anthropologists probably will not agree with his conclusions, but none can quarrel with the insights the author gives us into the role played in the Mexican's daily life by his love for the diminutive. The core of the work is the catalogue of objects from the author's own collection, illustrated by himself, with each object carefully drawn to its actual size. As his own illustrator Charpenel himself exhibits the patience and painstaking care for small detail that he praises in the anonymous craftsmen and artists who created the objects he writes about, ingenious little machines like the pig in Plate IV, made out of a pecan shell and designed so a captive fly within it can move the pig's eyes, ears, and tail; and delicate works of craftsmanship such as tiny musical instruments, made of the same woods as the real ones that served as models and with finely detailed decorations in mother-of-pearl. The Prologue, by Gabriel Moedano, one of Mexico's foremost folklorists and himself an authority on Mexican arts and crafts, complements Charpenel's work by giving the reader the anthropological and folkloristic point of view in regard to the subject. An English-language summary of Charpenel's notes has been added for the reader whose interest in Mexican arts and crafts is greater than his knowledge of Spanish. With Las miniaturas en el arte popular mexicano the Center for Intercultural Studies in Folklore and Oral History initiates its Latin American Folklore Series, which will attempt to make available to scholars important contributions to the folklore of Latin America that otherwise might long remain unrecognized.
