No Binding. Condizione: Fine. A fascinating and highly significant 18th-century manuscript letter documenting the history of botany and early horticultural shipping logistics. The letter is written by Giovanni Andrea Gabrielli, a sourcing agent in Modena, and addressed to Pietro Vassalli, a prominent banker in Milan. The paramount historical value of this document lies in its scientific content. Gabrielli advises the banker to source specific plants from Dr. Giovanni Lapi, a historically renowned 18th-century botanist, Professor of Botany at the Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova in Florence, and a founding director of the local botanical gardens. Furthermore, the letter provides a remarkably detailed account of 18th-century logistics for shipping live flora, noting that "pyramidal rose" plants must be extracted from pots, kept with their "fresh root-ball of the same earth," and shipped carefully in a wooden box via rapid courier to survive the journey from Sassuolo to Milan. Physical Details: The letter consists of two manuscript pages written in elegant Italian on laid paper, complete with the integral address leaf. The address leaf features a remnant of the original red wax seal. The document is in excellent antiquarian condition with typical fold lines. English Translation: "Modena, 4 October 1789. In reply to your kind letter of the 30th past, I must with displeasure inform you that, having returned from the country, this Botanical Gardener, with whom I spoke and requested the various Plants specified in the note sent by the last post, told me that not even one of them is to be found in the said Garden, and that it will not be so easy for me to find them even in these nearby Gardens. He leads me to believe, however, that having recourse to Florence, either to that Dr. Lapi, Professor of Botany in the Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova, or to that Abbot Fontebuoni, it will be easy to find them. You, however, who have correspondences, will still have the means of being able to serve your Friend, having recourse to one of the two aforementioned Subjects, the one a Professor, the other an amateur. The two Plants of minimal Pyramidal Roses have already been secured by me, and I am assured that each of them will fortuitously produce thirty or forty beautiful buds in the Spring. These I will have brought here from Sassuolo in Pots, in order to extract them from them, and with the fresh root-ball of the same earth, I will have them carefully placed in a Box, so that the journey cannot damage them, and since the Gardener makes me understand that it will only be good to wait a few days to do such a thing, so in this meantime, You will be pleased to advise me which route I should take to get it to you, that is, whether that of the Carrier, or that of the ordinary courier of Milan, with the warning, that for the Carrier, being small packages, one must pay the carriage at the pleasure of the Carrier, and moreover that the Box would remain a long time in transit, and therefore the Plants more exposed to danger. On the contrary, with the ordinary courier, the expense will always be according to the Tariff. but it will be prompt, and the Plants, we are sure, will not suffer. I will be awaiting your further determinations. Your most devoted and obliged servant, Gio: Andrea Gabrielli". Signed by Author(s).…
