Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a detailed analysis of the healthiness of Ravenna's air from the times of Strabo until the 17th century. It begins by examining the writings of ancient historians who described Ravenna as a healthy city located amidst marshes. Yet, the author argues that those marshes were not stagnant and putrid as they are today, but rather a complex system of flowing channels which prevented the formation of harmful miasmas. The author also analyzes the writings of physicians and naturalists from the Middle Ages and Renaissance who provide evidence of a change in the healthiness of Ravenna's air. The author argues that this change was due to a combination of factors, including the diversion of rivers, the silting up of marshes, and the construction of salt pans. This book is a valuable contribution to our understanding of the history of public health and environmental change in Italy. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
