The book concerns her experiences in China during the revolutionary period, particularly the upheavals surrounding the Chinese Nationalist and Communist movements of the 1920s. She was actually in China during the disturbances of 1927 and was subsequently expelled from central China. It is consequently more than a conventional travel book: it provides a female missionary's first-hand observations of Chinese society and the political revolution of the 1920s.
