Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. 24 pages : 21 cm. On view and for sale at Burlington Gallery, 191, Piccadilly, from March 16, 1874. INTRODUCTION. THE following pictures of "Round the World," are by Mr. William Simpson, first known by his admirable sketches in the Crimea during the Russian war, and in the Caucasus, whither he accompanied the late Duke of Newcastle, and subsequently by his water-colour pictures of India, Cashmere, Thibet, Russia, which he visited on the occasion of the marriage of the Czarewitch and Princess Dagmar, and of Abyssinia. The Russian and Abyssinian tours were undertaken by Mr. Simpson in his capacity of special artist to the Illustrated London News, in which capacity also he went to Egypt on the opening of the Suez Canal; to Rome at the sitting of the Ecumenical Council; and, still later, to the seat of the Franco-German war, in which he was present at Sedan, Metz, and Strasbourg, entering the two latter places with the German troops. He was in Paris under the reign of the Commune, at the fall of the Vendôme Column, and during the week's fighting and the burning of a portion of the city. His sketches of many of the above scenes are well known through the pages of that paper.
