Scotsman John Galt, 1779-1839, was a novelist, political commentator, entrepreneur. Some of his adventures included hanging out with Lord Byron in Gibraltar, Malta and Greece. Later he published the first full bio of Byron, was appointed as secretary to the Canada Company in 1824 and later its superintendent 1826-1829. In Upper Canada (Ontario) he founded Guelph, co-founded Goderich and Galt was named after him. His son Alexander was one of the Canadian fathers of Confederation and its first minister of finance. Cover detached but present with partial split to front-joint from crown, and quarter-inch split to rear-joint at crown. Title- and half-title pages missing. Some rubbing to crown and foot of backstrip, and some corner-wear. Marbled edging faded, some occasional mild soiling to pages (not affecting legibility), and some very mild, very occasional evidence of dampstain to upper margins (not affecting text).
