The essays by students and colleagues of Paul MacKendrick are gathered here to recognize the career of a distinguished classicist. The Tabula Gratulatoria contains a list of well-wishers; the editors apologize for all omissions. Paul MacKendrick was born on 11 February 1914, the son of Ralph and Sarah (Harvey) MacKendrick, in Taunton, MA, where he attended Hopewell Grammar (1926) and Taunton High School (1930). In 1934 he graduated with an A.B. degree from Harvard University, was elected to BK, and gave the Latin commencement ad-dress. In what would prove to be a regular itinerary, he crossed the Atlantic for Europe, and in the years 1934-1936 was a student at Balliol-he returned often to Balliol and to Churchill College, Cambridge. Back at Harvard he received an A.M. degree in 1937, and in 1938 a Ph.D. under Sterling Dow with a dissertation entitled de gente Attica Eumolpidarum.

Aggiungi al carrellokart. / Paperback. Condizione: Gut. X, 239 Seiten / p. Bibliotheksexemplar mit Signaturschild und Stempeln, altersgemäß guter Zustand / Library copy with signature label and stamps, good condition for age - PREFACE This is the first volume of a proposed three-volume set on Petronius. The other two will be A Petronius Allusion Book and The Influence of Petronius in England and America. We had originally intended to combine everything including this bibliography in one volume. But it quickly became clear that this would be impossible, that Petronius had a considerable influence. Quite separately from the other, each of us had begun to map out what amounted to the same area. The reasonable thing to do was to combine resources and work together. This we did from 1969 on. In a very general way the task was divided, but each of us was also immediately and directly responsible for the work of the other: Ms. Stuckey saw to the editions and translations, and Mr. Schmeling to the secondary material. According to the strict interpretation of professional bibliographers this present work would be termed a handlist. Whatever it be called, we hope only that it will be useful. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Hardcover, xii + 233 pages, NOT ex-library. Book is clean and bright with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Issued without a dust jacket. -- Despite the fact that post-modern aesthetics deny the existence or validity of genres, the tendency nowadays is to assume that there was in Antiquity a homogeneous group of works of narrative prose fiction that, despite their differences, displayed a series of recurrent, iterative, thematic, and formal characteristics, which allows us to label them novels. The papers assembled in this volume include extended prose narratives of all kind and thereby widen and enrich the scope of the canon. The essays explore a wide variety of texts, crossed genres, and hybrid forms, which transgress the boundaries of the so-called ancient novel, providing an excellent insight into different kinds of narrative prose in antiquity. -- Contents: Introduction; 1. Utopia and Paradoxography: -- Lucian's Philosophical Island / Diskin Clay [Pillars of Hercules; Islands of the Blest; Lucian's Island of the Blest]; Pillars of Hercules: The Genre Understanding of the Utopian Novel / Heinrich Kuch; Homeric Parody, the Isle of the Blessed, and the Nature of Paideia in Lucian's Verae Historiae / Benjamin Haller; Lucian's True Stories: Paradoxography and False Discourse / Valentina Popescu [Mimesis and Mimics of Paradoxo-Graphy; True Stories Through the 'katoptrov' of the Prologue; In lieu of Conclusion]; -- 2. Fluid Texts: -- Adventures of Six Men in a Boat: The Astral Determinants of a Maritime Narrative in the Anthologies of Vettius Valens / Roger Beck; Facts or Fiction? The Fruitful Relationship Between Ancient Novel and Literary Miscellany / Hendrik Müller-Reineke [Introduction; Ancient Literary Miscellany as a Genre Proper?; Ancient Novel and Miscellany: Differences and Similarities (Common Roots; Symposiastic Structure; Common Authors and Direct Connections; Conclusion)]; Isis-Epiphany in the Life of Aesop: A Structural Analytic Approach / Grammatiki A. Karla [Miracle of How Aesop Acquired His Voice; Preparation; Incubation; Aesop's Reaction]; -- 3. Crossed Genres: -- Medicine and the Novel: Apuleius' Bonding with the Educated Reader / Regine May; Pirates in the Library / Nicolas Boulic & Françoise Létoublon [Introduction; Pirates and Piracy in Classical and Hellenistic Literature: Their Main Characteristics; Pirates and Brigands as a Topos in the Ancient Novels: Coherence and Variations; Pirates as a Metaphor in the Ancient Novel; Metaphor of Love as Piracy: Sources and Echoes; Conclusion]; Liminal Games: Fluidity of the Sphragis of a Novelist / Loreto Nuñez [Introduction; Beginnings; Endings; Protean Sphragides of an Ancient Novelist: Conclusions without Frontiers?]; -- 4. Hybrid Forms: -- Tombs and Stables, Roofs and Brothels, Dens and Raids in Lollianos' Fragments / Angelo Casanova; Erotic Fiction and Christian Sexual Ethics in Nonnus' Episode of Morrheus and Chalcomede / Fotini Hadjittofi [Introduction; Empowered Women?; Male Powerlessness]; Hagiographic Romance: Novelistic Narrative Strategy in Jerome's Lives of Hermits / Jiri Subrt; Abstracts; Autobiographical Notes; Indices [Index locorum; General Index].
