Som de fleste ældre danske museer var Kobberstiksamlingen i gamle dage en del af kongehusets samlinger. Den udgjorde en afdeling af det kongelige bibliotek og omfattede så vidt vi ved næsten udelukkende grafik, d.v.s. billeder trykt på papir ved hjælp af de teknikker, der beskrives i det følgende afsnit. Samlingens ældste historie er ikke kendt, men muligvis rækker den så langt tilbage som til 1521, hvor den tyske kunstner Albrecht Dürer i Bruxelles traf Christian Il og den 3. juli skænkede kongen et sæt af sine bedste kobberstik. Dürer beretter selv herom i sin rejsedagbog. Nu besad Kobberstiksamlingen ifølge de ældste inventarer fra 1600-tallet et betydeligt antal af Dürers kobberstik, og hvad inventarerne opregner kan meget vel være de selvsamme meget smukke, tidlige tryk, der den dag i dag udgør kernen i samlingens bestand af grafik fra omkring år 1500. Dersom Kobberstiksamlingens historie altså virkelig lader sig føre så langt tilbage som til 1521, hører den til de ældste i verden, ja er måske ligefrem den ældste. Udover grafikken rummer Kobberstiksamlingen også betydelige mængder af tegninger udført af kunstnere fra mange lande og perioder. I vare dage har man været tilbøjelig til at betragte tegningerne med større interesse end grafikken; de grafiske blade er jo ifølge deres tekniske natur mangfoldiggjorte og eksisterer som regel i mange eksemplarer, mens hver tegning er et unikum og derfor enestående. Imidlertid tyder noget på, at interessen for også den ældre grafik igen er voksende. Et symptom herpå er den serie store udstillinger, som Albertina, Wiens berømte kobberstiksamling, i de senere år har arrangeret. De ypperlige kataloger til denne række udstillinger, som stadig fortsætter, findes omtalt i den efterfølgende bibliografi og er for tiden den bedste ledetråd gennem grafikkens ældre historie. Forenklet sagt kan grafikken deles i to kategorier. En består af grafik frembragt i fuldkommen frihed, som for eksempel Rembrandts og Goyas raderinger, Dürers kobberstik; grafikeren er her sin egen herre og benytter de grafiske teknikker til at give sine egne kunstneriske forestillinger synlig form. En anden kategori er billedreproduktionerne. Professionelle grafikere gengiver her andre kunstneres værker, som det for eksempel er tilfældet med Marcantonio Raimondis kobberstik efter Raffaels billeder, Ugo da Carpis clairobscur træsnit efter Parmigianino, og de blade, der i 1700-tallet blev skabt som gengivelser af Watteaus og Bouchers malerier, tegninger og pasteller. Man må dog ikke forestille sig, at der er tale om to kategorier, som i kunstnerisk henseende nødvendigvis må være vidt forskellige. Kunstens historie viser unægtelig mange eksempler på kunstnerisk svage arbejder af de frie grafikere, og omvendt findes der reproduktionsgrafik, hvor ypperlig teknik og åndfuld fortolkning resulterer i værker af høj, selvstændig kunstværdi. De professionelle, reproducerende grafikere klassificeredes aldrig som håndværkere, men besad en kunstners hele uddannelse og regnedes for kunstnere. Selv Goya startede sin grafiske produktion med at reproducere malerier af Velázquez. I det efterfølgende billedudvalg vil man derfor i adskillige tilfælde finde den fri grafik og den reproducerende grafik anbragt side om side. Med samlingerne af grafik opbyggede de danske konger en art billedarkiv, der hørte hjemme i biblioteket. De grafiske blade opbevaredes indklæbet i store folianter ofte uden ringeste forsøg på at bringe orden i mangfoldigheden. Det var dog for reproduktionsgrafikkens vedkommende ei gennemgående princip, at for eksempel alle kobberstik, der »forestillede« malerier af Raffael, anbragtes samlet under Raffaels navn og ikke, som det ville have været tilfældet i dag, under navnet på den kunstner, der havde udført selve det foreliggende kunstværk, nemlig kobberstikket.
