Autorenporträt: Karl Eugen Gass (geboren am 21. M…ärz 1912 in Kassel; gestorben am 18. September 1944 bei Eindhoven in den Niederlanden) war ein im Krieg gefallener deutscher Nachwuchsromanist und Literat, Lieblingsschüler von Ernst Robert Curtius. Gass war Stipendiat der Scuola Normale in Pisa und promovierte 1938 bei Ernst Robert Curtius in Bonn mit der Arbeit Antoine de Rivarol (1753-1801) und der Ausgang der französischen Aufklärung (Hagen 1938). Dann wurde er Abteilungsassistent im Deutschen Kulturinstitut (Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut) in Rom. Er fiel im Kriegseinsatz. Ihm schrieb Ernst Robert Curtius am 28. April 1943: Sie sind der einzige meiner Schüler, von dem ich glaube verstanden zu werden und der vielleicht einst mein Erbe übernehmen könnte (Hausmann 2008, S. 155).(aus Wikipedia). Nel carteggio si mostra ciò che non conosciamo più: l'informazione perfetta («Devo essere nello stesso tempo dappertutto, leggere Sant'Agostino ac…canto agli Inni Orfici, al Roman de la Rose e così via»: Curtius), il sentimento perfetto («Il dialogo si eleva a un altro livello se si ha qualcosa in comune che si ama»: Gass; «La quiete e la passività del puro accogliere deve essere l'atteggiamento fondamentale del critico»: Curtius), l'idea che la vita sia degna solo in quanto destino, come sa Nietzsche («Se viene annientata la scienza umanistica tedesca, tutta la scienza umanistica finisce»: Curtius). Gass sa la stessa cosa: «Se l'uomo stenta un'esistenza di massa, il suo lato migliore si atrofizza, sebbene egli possa ancora fare grandi cose»: Gass).
