Im Zentrum stehen Charaktere des Natürlichen und deren Imitation, Emulation und Transformation in den Künsten - paradigmatisch Lebendigkeit, Kraft/Intensität, Form, Qualität. Die Publikationen analysieren vor diesem Hintergrund zum einen grundlegende Analogien und Übertragungsvorgänge zwischen Kunst und Natur. And yet, the apparent life of these sculptures is persistently obscured by their materiality. Soft, undulating flesh, dramatic movements, and fluttering draperies are captured in hard and lifeless marble. Thus, sculpture challenges the beholder, is cause for confusion or frustration. Taking the manner in which the beholder's engagement with sculpture is played out in contemporary poetry and other sources as a point of departure and also introducing ideas from modern-day psychology, this study explores the various ways contemporary viewers dealt with sculpture's double character. As a result, a new light is shed on some of the unquestionable masterpieces of European art. Eine Reihe von Kunsthistorikern machte sich während… der Mode des Neobarock daran, den Architekturstil des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts neu zu erforschen und zu werten, und versuchte auch in der Antike einen «Barockstil» zu definieren. Diese drei Wiederholungen sollten erlauben, eine Gesetzmässigkeit im geschichtlichen Verlauf zu erkennen. Einen solchen Einblick ins «Innere der Kunst» erklärte Wölfflin zum eigentlichen Ziel der Kunstgeschichte. Unter den zahlreichen Versuchen der Definition eines Barockstils hat Wölfflins Schrift durch die Qualität ihrer Methode ihren hohen Rang behalten. Eine Untersuchung über Wesen und Entstehung des Barockstils in Italien (1888) griff Heinrich Wölfflin die Umwertung des Barockstils auf. Eine Reihe von Kunsthistorikern machte sich während der Mode des Neobarock daran, den Architektur…stil des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts neu zu erforschen und zu werten, und versuchte auch in der Antike einen «Barockstil» zu definieren. Diese drei Wiederholungen sollten erlauben, eine Gesetzmässigkeit im geschichtlichen Verlauf zu erkennen. Einen solchen Einblick ins «Innere der Kunst» erklärte Wölfflin zum eigentlichen Ziel der Kunstgeschichte. Unter den zahlreichen Versuchen der Definition eines Barockstils hat Wölfflins Schrift durch die Qualität ihrer Methode ihren hohen Rang behalten. Diese zeichnet sich aus durch beschreibende Analyse und vergleichende Entgegensetzung der Stile von Renaissance und Barock, durch den Versuch, die Gründe für den Stilwandel zu erklären, und schliesslich durch die Verifizierung der Analyse an ausgewählten sakralen und profanen Gebäuden in Rom. Mit dem differenzierenden Vergleich zwischen Renaissance und Barock schuf sich Wölfflin die Grundlage für eine Kritik des Barock, die weit über der früheren Geringschätzung steht. In der Einleitung analysiert Oskar Bätschmann die Entstehung, die historischen Voraussetzungen, die Methode und die Rezeption der Arbeit. Die Ausgabe wird von einem kritischen Kommentar von Noemi Bearth und Karolina Zgraja begleitet.
