Very good. Numerous parody ballads on principally English (Victorian) themes, but aslo including spoofs of American and Spanish balladry. Notalbe for the consistent "Punch" style of illustration throughout. Stamp of Francis Robinson, Newport, R.I. on the front pastedown.

Bookseller's blindstamp to flyleaf, and a binder's ticket to rear flyleaf. Rear hinge starting, but quite firm. A crisp, clean copy with very light occasional spotting. Some toning and rubbing to spine and other extremities. Near fine.

A gilded edition of the hugely popular Bon Gaultier ballads, compiled under pseudonym by Scottish poets William Edmonstoune Ayton (1813-1865) and Sir Theodore Martin (1816-1909). First published in magazines in 1845, this copy is beautifully illustrated by Alfred Crowquill (i.e. Alfred Henry Forrester) (1804-1872). Divided into 'English', 'Spanish', 'American', and 'Miscellaneous', the collection of parodied ballads pokes fun at romantic, embellished verse. Size: 16mo.
