Nicht erst 1683 auf der »Concord«, sondern bereits 1607 waren deutsche Bauhandwerker Passagiere auf der »Discovery« und »Good Speed«. Sie bauten in Jamestown, Virginia, Häuser für die Engländer und auch für die Indianer. Und weil sie mit diesen offensichtlich besser auskamen, belegte sie der englische Kapitän John Smith mit dem Fluch »Those Damn' Dutch«. Diese und andere Berichte belegen, daß lange vor der Gründung Germantowns und Philadelphias in Pennsylvania, von Virginia bis Maine junge Deutsche schon im 17. Jahrhundert als Siedler Nordamerikas auftraten. Autor: Prof. em. Christian Gellinek lehrte in Yale, forschte am angesehenen Institut für Vergleichende Städtegeschichte in Münster 1987 bis 1995.
