About the book: André Gelpke's series Sex-Theater was produced in the 1970s and depicted per…formers from a number of different sex theatres in Hamburg's St. Pauli district. "The fascination that captivated me as a photographer came from the personality of the individual, from the performer who was prepared to realize in public the secret sexual fantasies of an inhibited society, simply in exchange for a fee." Sex-Theater was first published as a book in 1981 and quickly sold out. The edition produced by cpress together with Spector Books represents a new staging of the series: it includes an expanded selection of images and new texts, and is presented in a form that offers this collection of photos a contemporary framing. The era that is depicted here is over, and the decline of these clubs is documented in Sex-Theater.

Documentary of the Carnival Season 1978/79 in "The Gürzenich" building in Cologne. Created during the Carnival Season November 1978 to February 1979. Gelpke visited the weekend Carnival sessions, documenting and, in his brief text, compares some carnival customs to marching soldiers, e.g. the collective laughter prompted by the sound of a trombone, or the touching of each other on command. Customs that scared the northern German photographer. It is not a series about Carnival in the Rhineland,says Gelpke, but rather a cause or possibility to speak of a certain social class, that spots every opportunity to gain influence in order to capitalize. Gelpke captures the movement and gatherings in between the highlights of the carnival session, on stairways, behind curtains, small groups, etc. With biographical notes and exhibition history at rear. Eine Beschränkung auf europäische Themen gab es nur in den ersten Ausgaben; spätestens 1985, so Müller-Pohle, hatte sich der Titel der Zeitschrift ''vom Wörtlichen zum Metaphorischen gewandelt: Europa bedeutet Transnationalismus, Pluralismus, Vielfalt. André Gelpke's series Sex-Theater was produced in the 1970s and depicted performers from a number of different sex theatres in Hamburg's St. Pauli district. "The fascination that captivated me as a photographer came from the personality of the individual, from the performer who w…as prepared to realize in public the secret sexual fantasies of an inhibited society, simply in exchange for a fee." Sex-Theater was first published as a book in 1981 and quickly sold out. The edition produced by cpress together with Spector Books represents a new staging of the series: it includes an expanded selection of images and new texts, and is presented in a form that offers this collection of photos a contemporary framing.
