Ouvrage inédit". Sur le titre l'auteur se désigne comme "Ancien commerçant dans les mers du Sud, né à Paris le 2 mai 1793, parti de France en 1816, et revenu dans sa patrie le 25 décembre 1823. Numa Broc, Dico. illustré des explorateurs français du XIX° s., Amérique, 152: "Le voyage de Gendrin, c'est le Nouveau Monde vu par un boutiquier. Témoignage modeste donc, très partiel, très subjectif, très anecdotique. Mais témoignage intéressant dans la mesure où il offre une image en négatif de l'Amérique du Sud, aux antipodes de celle des grands voyageurs scientifiques, les d'Orbigny, les Saint-Hilaire, les Castelnau". Bon exemplaire de ce livre rare: Gendrin a fait imprimer un nombre relativement restreint d'exemplaires (probablement moins de 250, puisque 130 ont été envoyés à des bibliothèques françaises), qui ont tous été offerts à une bibliothèque ou à un particulier.

Edition originale et rare de cette étonnante relation d'un voyage en Amérique du sud, due à Victor-Athanase Gendrin, commerçant dans les mers du sud. Contrairement à des relations de voyageurs scientifiques comme d'Orbigny, Saint-Hilaire ou Castelnau, ce témoignage particulièrement subjectif et naïf offre néanmoins une vision sincère d'un jeune voyageur en Amérique du sud. Son auteur versaillais, né à Paris le 2 mai 1793, quitte la France en 1816 pour faire du commerce dans les mers du Sud, avant de rentrer en France le 25 décembre 1823. En préambule de son récit, Gendrin certifie l'authenticité des aventures décrites : "Ces voyages seraient restés dans l'oubli si quelques personnes, aussi honorables que obligeantes, à qui j'en ai lu plusieurs passages, ne l'eussent conseillées d'en écrire le récit complet. A les entendre, il était curieux d'y voir un jeune homme se tirer par lui-même de positions fâcheuses et difficiles, et raconter ensuite son histoire aussi intéressante que instructive. Si le style n'y est pas élevé, le fond est de la plus exacte vérité.". L' ouvrage est illustré de 8 planches lithographiées, d'un portrait-frontispice et d'une carte. Il s'agit d'une publication à compte d'auteur très restreinte (moins de 250) dont une bonne partie a été offerte aux 130 bibliothèques des principales villes de France ou à des particuliers. Le présent exemplaire est ainsi adressé à M. le baron Caruel de Saint-Martin, député de Seine-et-Oise en 1852 et 1857. Full green shagreen, decorations and text on the covers, smooth spine decorated and titled, gilt fillet and motifs on the edges, gilt edges, embossed paper marbling. (Worn spine). Rare first edition of this astonishing account of a voyage to South America by Victor-Athanase Gendrin, a merchant in the South Seas. Unlike the accounts of scientific travelers such as d'Orbigny, Saint-Hilaire, or Castelnau, this particularly subjective and naïve testimony nevertheless offers a sincere vision of a young traveler in South America. Its author, born in Paris on May 2, 1793, left France in 1816 to trade in the South Seas, before returning to France on December 25, 1823. In the preface to his account, Gendrin certifies the authenticity of the adventures described: "These travels would have remained forgotten if a few people, as honorable as they were obliging, to whom I read several passages, had not advised me to write the complete account. According to them, it was curious to see a young man extricate himself from unfortunate and difficult situations and then recount his story in a manner as interesting as it was instructive. While the style is not sophisticated, the content is entirely true." The work is illustrated with eight lithographed plates, a frontispiece portrait, and a map. It is a very limited self-published work (less than 250 copies), a large number of which were donated to 130 libraries in major French cities or to private individuals. This copy is addressed to Baron Caruel de Saint-Martin, deputy for Seine-et-Oise in 1852 and 1857. A fine copy.

About half of the material is taken from the 1856 edition (the introduction, a poem by Dorlin Père, the author's portrait and 8 plates), but the… other half is newly included here: 36 pages with lithographed reproductions of letters received after the 1856 publication."Gendrin worked in the upholstery trade in Paris, and in 1816 travelled with his employer who was moving to Rio de Janeiro. After some time he was able to set up his own business, a shop in which he sold snuff, snuff-boxes, mirrors, . [etc.] Business proved profitable, but having been informed by French colleagues who travelled to Chile of the good commercial opportunities offered by that country, he sold his shop, invested everything in suitable merchandise, and left for Valparaiso, sailing around Cape Horn. He also set up business in Santiago, He afterwards crossed the Andes to Buenos Aires and returned to France in 1823. Although he did not make a fortune, he succeeded in saving enough money to provide him with an income for the rest of his life. The Récit historique is an unpretentious narrative of his life in South America. Written with a charming spontaneity and candour, the book tells the life and business of a small shopkeeper in Rio de Janeiro, and a travelling salesman in Chile in Argentina. His remarks about the country and daily life of a shopkeeper during the opening years of the nineteenth century constitute a valuable document of the conditions of the French small commercial establishments in Brazil, which were of such importance in the social life of the capital city. It is to my knowledge the only book in existence about the lives in Brazil of the small French traders, the 'pacotilleurs''' (Borba de Moraes).With a dedication to ''M. Rouyrre 1861'' on the front board and a manuscript note on the first endpaper: ''Hommage par l'auteur V.A. Gendrin à Monsieur Rouyrre. Versailles. 1881''. Some occasional spots and a tiny tear in the fore-edge margin of about 5 leaves; a good copy.l Palau 101130 note; cf. Borba de Moraes, p. 348; not in Sabin. Contemporary cloth. He then journeyed coast-to-coast, arriving at Buenos Aires, from where he departed for France. Rare.
