They are the oracles of milkmaids and simple serving girls; and sometimes have even the honour of perusing the white hands of gentlemen's daughters, when rambling about their father's grounds. They are the bane of good housewives and thrifty farmers, and odious in the eyes of country justices; but, like all other vagabond beings, they have something to commend them to the fancy. They are among the last traces, in these matter-of-fact days, of the motley population of former times; and are whimsically associated in my mind with fairies and witches, Robin Good Fellow, Robin Hood, and the other fantastical personages of poetry.' Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fair. 1st Edition. London: John Murray, 1824, FIRST Edition. Contemporary half leather binding, rubbed and worn, with gilt titles to red leather labels, five raised bands, rubbed joints, rubbed with loss to the top and base of the spine, board edges and corners, pages clean and bright. First edition of Washington Irving's collection of short stories largely set in Europe. From Wikipedia - "In August 1824, Irving published the collection of essays Tales of a Traveller including the short story "The Devil and Tom Walker" under his Geoffrey Crayon persona. "I think there are in it some of the best things I have ever written", Irving told his sister. But while the book sold respectably, Traveller was dismissed by critics, who panned both Traveller and its author. "The public have been led to expect better things", wrote the United States Literary Gazette, while the New-York Mirror pronounced Irving "overrated". Hurt and depressed by the book's reception, Irving retreated to Paris where he spent the next year worrying about finances and scribbling down ideas for projects that never materialized." Pagination: xiv, 364pp; vi, 394, [2]pp. Provenance: no inscriptions or bookplates. Approximately 8 ½ inches tall (22cm). Condition Report Externally Spine fair to good condition gilt titles to red labels, five raised bands, gilt decorated compartments, worn, marked and rubbed with minor loss.
