Robert Sibbald (1641-1722) was born in Fife and qualified as a physician after study in Leiden and Paris. He was appointed as the first Professor of Medicine at Edinburgh University and became Geographer Royal in 1682. He had a particular interest in creating frameworks for proper study - the proper institutions and evidence base. This work 'The Illustrated Essay of the Natural History of Scotland' is a systematic review of the natural resources of Scotland - from the weather to geography, geology, plant and animal life - including disease and local cures. This copy has a sound but worn rebacked cloth binding with gilt titles and date to spine.
