Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket).; 19.5 x 25.5 cm.; 0.6 kg.; 139 pages.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The dust jacket has tears on the front cover, spine and back cover, is chipped at the bottom and top of the spine and shows edge wear, scuffs and scratches throughout. Interior with minor signs of wear.; The Ching-tê-chên Tao Lu, or An Account of Pottery at Ching-tê-chên, is regarded by the Chinese as one of the two standard works by native authors on their pottery and porcelain (the other is the T'ao Shuo by Chu T'ung-ch'uan). As explained in a Preface by the local District Officer, the bulk of the book is the work of one Lan P'u (alias Pin-Nan), a scholar and native of Ching-tê-chên itself, the famous township in Kiangsi province which for nearly a thousand years has been the heart of the Chinese porcelain industry. Lan P'u died in 1795 with his work substantially done but unpublished and the manuscript lay hidden away for twenty years. But in 1811 another local scholar, Chêng-t'ing-kuei, a pupil of the original compiler, was found to complete the task and to secure its publication in 1815. While, as the title implies, the work centres upon Ching-tê-chên and specific- ally claims to give a specialist account hitherto lacking of the history and technique of Ching-tê-chên wares, it does in fact consider every kiln or kiln site in China known to the compilers. The name, familiarly reduced to T'ao Lu, has been known to English devotees of Chinese ceramics for several decades; but not all who invoke the name can claim to be closely acquainted with its contents. Indeed, except for the minute company who can read the original Chinese, none has had the opportunity of becoming so; for no translation into English has hitherto appeared. The present work provides a complete translation and remedies this situation. An Introduction and an Appendix on many of the numerous Chinese works quoted has been provided by the translator; and footnotes, together with an index and extensive table of contents, will help the reader to find his way about.
