Walter John Strachan (19031994) was an inspirational school teacher at Bishops Stortford College, Hertfordshire, who had a parallel career as a poet, French translator, critic and connoisseur. He began to write poetry in the early 1940s and issued two full-length collections, Moments of Time (London: Sylvan Press, 1947) and The Seasons Pause (London: Secker and Warburg, 1950). In these memoirs and selections from his correspondence, Strachan evokes the personalities of many of the writers, graphic artists and sculptors including Sylvia Townsend Warner, and Henry Moore, whose work he championed and who became his friends.…
