Erste Ausgabe, selten.- Schmidt [1803 Leipzig - 1832 Tübingen] "studierte in Göttingen, wo ihn Gauß zu seinen besten Schülern zählte. 1824 Privatdozent in Göttingen. Nach dem plötzlichen Tod von Johann Maier im gleichen Jahr übernahm er dessen Vorlesungen. 1831 wurde er außerordentlicher Professor und ging 1832 als ordentlicher Professor der Mathematik und Astronomie nach Tübingen, wo er aber kurz nach seiner Ankunft starb. 1828 veröffentlichte Schmidt in Göttingen eine 'Theorie der astronomischen Strahlenbrechung', die Gauß an Alexander von Humboldt sandte, als der nach der Höhe der Atmosphäre gefragt hatte. Am 12.10.1828 schrieb Gauß an Humboldt: 'Meinen jungen Freund, den Doctor Eduard Schmidt habe ich sehr glücklich gemacht mit der Nachricht, wie gütig Sie seine Schrift über die Strahlenbrechung aufgenommen haben. Ich empfehle ihn Ihrer Berücksichtigung, wenn sich einmal Gelegenheit finden sollte, wo für einen Platz ein ausgezeichneter Kopf mit gründlichen Kenntnissen gesucht wird'."
