Interspersed with extensive advertising including a full-page ad for Carleton Watkins photography studio and his "Yosemite Art Gallery" (p. 430), among dozens of other businesses including blacksmiths, nurseries, windmill dealers, printers, sewing machines, carriage painters, and the like. There is an interesting "Hotel Map" of San Francisco on the inside front cover as part of the ad for Bacon & Co., printers in San Francisco. Many of the ads are illustrated.Among the prominent people listed in the Santa Clara directory: Charles LeFranc, French winemaker who founded Almaden Vineyards in 1852, who made the first major plantings of fine European wine grapes in Santa Clara County. By the 1870s Almaden was recognized as one of California s leading wineries, and LeFranc in particular is remembered as a key figure in the county s emerging wine industry. Also Sheriff John Hicks Adams (1820-1886), Sheriff of Santa Clara County from 1864 to 1878, a long-serving lawman who was already prominent by 1874 and soon became famous statewide for his role in the capture and trial of bandit Tiburcio V squez, whose execution took place in San Jose in 1875.Paulson styles this as the second in a series of county handbooks, all of which are rare today. The first in the series covered Napa, Lake, Sonoma, and Mendocino counties. Among the ads herein is a full-page announcement for the third volume, which covered the southern counties of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Bernardino, Kern, and San Buena Ventura. The publisher states in his preface: In order to make my work equally acceptable to the merchant and farmer, the resident and the tourist, I have added a complete description of each County, City, Town, Village, Hamlet and Farming Centre; also of the Watering Places and all points of natural attraction. For the tourist or invalid who may visit California for pleasure or for sanitary reasons, this feature of my book, I am convinced, will be of great utility.The two-page color lithograph advertisement illustrates P. Schuttler's wagon, offered for sale by Marcus C. Hawley & Co, of Sacramento and San Francisco. The lithography by White & Brayley of Buffalo and Chicago. P. Schuttler s wagons were the product of Chicago manufacturer Peter Schuttler, a German immigrant who arrived in the United States in the 1830s and set up his own wagon works in Chicago in 1843. His firm quickly became one of the leading American makers of heavy freight and farm wagons, supplying emigrant and freighting traffic to the Far West and the Santa Fe Trail, and promoting its products under the well-known banner The Old Reliable Schuttler Wagon. The color lithograph county maps (5 county maps on 4 sheets) are all by George H. Baker, a noted pioneering California lithographer. The table of contents also only mentions one map: Agricultural Map of California (1883), which is color printed and present here in beautiful condition. The second map was apparently added to the separate book edition by the Pacific Rural Press: George H. Baker's Map of California and Nevada (San Francisco, 1876), drawn and compiled by Baker for Dewey & Co., publishers of Mining & Scientific Press, Pacific Rural Press.Eugene Woldemar E. W. Hilgard (1833-1916) brought a rigorous, science-forward approach to California agriculture that proved especially consequential for the state s emerging wine industry. After teaching geology and natural history at the University of Michigan (1873-1875), he came to UC Berkeley in 1875 as professor of agriculture and botany, later directing the state s Agricultural Experiment Station and serving as dean of the College of Agriculture. Applying soil chemistry and climate analysis to vineyards, Hilgard helped shape UC s early viticulture-and-enology mission (formalized by 1880 legislation) and published influential guidance on phylloxera and its remedies, including promotion of grafting vinifera onto resistant American rootstocks. He also acted as a public quality advocate: in a widely noted San Francisco Examiner article (Aug. 8, 1889) he blamed the industry s woes on overproduction of poor, unstable wines and argued that better varietal choices, harvest timing, sorting, sanitation, and fermentation practice would raise quality and encourage higher prices, an argument echoed in his UC Experiment Station wine pamphlets such as Shall California make sophisticated wines?
