Vintage illustrated sheet music issued to coincide with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's lavish Technicolor musical Balalaika, starring Nelson Eddy and Ilona Massey. The striking photographic cover reproduces the film's stars in costume, making this both a piece of popular music and an attractive example of Hollywood Golden Age movie ephemera. The story behind this song spans both Europe and Hollywood. Composer George Posford and lyricist Eric Maschwitz originally created At the Balalaika for the successful 1936 London stage musical Balalaika. When MGM adapted the production into the 1939 film, legendary studio music director and Academy Award-winning composer Herbert Stothart prepared the musical adaptation, while Broadway lyricists Bob Wright and Chet Forrest supplied revised English lyrics for American audiences. The resulting publication captures an interesting cultural journey - from London's West End to one of MGM's prestige musical productions during the studio system's golden era. Nelson Eddy, already America's premier operatic baritone on film, and Hungarian-born soprano Ilona Massey helped popularize the song for moviegoers, making this edition especially desirable for collectors of classic Hollywood memorabilia. This example remains in Very Good condition. The illustrated front cover displays well with bright color and strong eye appeal despite moderate edge wear, rubbing, light creasing, and age toning consistent with use. The principal flaw is a clean separation of the cover along the spine fold, a common condition issue with heavily handled sheet music of this period; the cover is complete and present. Interior pages remain clean and fully legible with no writing or performance markings observed. Born in 1902 on London's West End and by the age of 7 he was studying at the Trinity College of Music. By the time Mayerl was 20 he was resident pianist for a Southampton Hotel. It was there that British bandleader and saxophonist Bert Ralton first heard him, and instantly sought to hire him for his Havana Band at London's Savoy Hotel. From 1923 to 1926 Mayerl was a featured soloist with the band in the earliest years of the BBC. In 1926 Mayerl left the Havana band to pursue a solo career in recording and composition. While maintaining a schedule with the BBC, he also toured the UK performing in venues of all sizes, taking time off to create increasingly complex syncopation's for publication. More importantly, he started publishing not just his own works, but some transcriptions of other composer's pieces he had recorded. In the 1930s, Mayerl established a correspondence course 'The Billy Mayerl Club Magazine' for instruction in piano and composition. He spent the war primarily in London, although publishing very little during this time. Once peace had been re-established, Billy renewed his ties with radio. He also took his music to USA and Australasia. A heavy smoker, Billy finally died from a heart attack in 1959 at the tender age of 57. His post-war pieces have a mellow and classical line with a more melancholic composition, along with his unique sound of tenth's and fourth's, albeit wound around with more sophistication, one cannot help wondering what he would have written had he lived into the 1970s.
