Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 3rd Edition. xlv, [50]-240pp, steel engraved frontispiece, green cloth with gilt titles, lower extremities worn thru, front inner hinge cracked, a good copy overall. The author was born in Connecticut in 1802. He attended Brown University, where one of his instructors was Horace Mann, and one of his classmates was Samuel G. Howe. In 1830 he settled in Louisville, Kentucky, where he founded the Louisville Journal, one of the outstanding literary newspapers in the country. His clever and forceful editorials are thought to have been one of the factors that kept Kentucky in the Union during the Civil War. As a poet, he was a master of the blank verse form. With a frontispiece on coated paper. 1932 reissue of the Barse & Company original, this copy with the new illustrated endpapers by N. Braley. Ads at the rear list titles through 1932. The cloth shows on a touch of edgewear, with solid hinges and a square binding. Spine is lightly sunned. Former owner's stamp and gift inscription dated 1935 to the front free endpaper, otherwise unmarked. A clean, tight copy of the penultimate title in this series. Mattson & Davis 04300, format 2.

Piece of front flap info on "The Aviation Series" neatly glued to front fixed endpaper. Pages are clean. Four full page illustrations (b&w). 206 pages. Clean illustrated jacket has corner chip at top spine edge, a few short closed edge tears, piece missing from rear panel; enclosed in new archival quality removable mylar cover.
