Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover bound in vivid blue cloth, with gilt spine lettering and a blind-stamped publisher's device on the rear board. In the original, unclipped dust jacket retaining its $7.95 price. Jacket design by Paul Bacon Studio, Inc.; illustrated endpaper maps of the Southern France theater of operations by Samuel H. Bryant. With historical photographs, chapter notes, bibliography, and index. An extensively researched account of the First Airborne Task Force and its participation in the Allied invasion of Southern France on August 15, 1944, during Operation Dragoon. Drawing upon firsthand testimony, military records, and interviews with participants, Adleman and Walton reconstruct the airborne landings, the fighting around Le Muy, the liberation of Cannes and Nice, and the force's advance toward the Franco-Italian frontier. The narrative captures both the operational significance and human experiences of this comparatively overlooked campaign. Especially noteworthy are the detailed cartographic endpapers, wartime photographs, and documented interviews with senior officers, including Major General Robert T. Frederick. Condition: Very Good+ hardcover in Very Good+ dust jacket. The bright blue cloth boards are clean and attractive, with a firm, square binding, well-preserved gilt spine lettering, and light handling wear. The upper page edges exhibit scattered foxing and age-toning; interior pages are clean and unmarked, with no annotations observed. The original dust jacket is exceptionally well preserved overall, retaining strong color and its unclipped price, with modest rubbing and localized edge wear, including small creases and short closed tears near the upper edges. The jacket is housed in a removable protective sleeve; reflections visible in the photographs are from the sleeve and are not defects in the jacket. A handsome first-edition copy with its original photographic jacket and cartographic endpapers intact. The rear flap explicitly credits the jacket design to Paul Bacon Studio, Inc. Bacon (1923-2015) was one of the most influential American book-jacket designers of the twentieth century, celebrated for the distinctive Big Book Look: bold typography paired with a relatively small, memorable illustration. His work included jackets for Catch-22, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and Portnoy's Complaint. This book's oversized blue lettering and winged champagne cork are characteristic of that approach. The illustrated endpapers are not merely decorative. Samuel H. Bryant's two-color maps identify Allied and German formations, airborne landing areas, principal roads, and the terrain surrounding the invasion. His signature is visible on the map. Their survival in excellent condition adds both historical research value and visual appeal. The rear jacket also features a portrait of the authors credited to Fabian Bachrach, adding another identifiable photographic contributor to this edition.…

Robert H. Adleman (May 7, 1919 - November 16, 1995) was an American novelist and historian. Adleman was a photographer and tail gunner in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he became a businessman and a historian, and began a collaboration with U.S. Army Colonel George Walton to write books about World War II, the most successful of which was 1966's The Devil's Brigade. A story about the 1st Special Service Force nicknamed the "Devil's Brigade". Colonel George Walton was a lawyer and retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He served with the Devil's Brigade in Italy. Derived from a Kirkus review: An energetic, highly readable account of the Allied military campaign in Italy which led to the occupation of Rome in 1944, with controversies revived, personalities rounded out, and great and terrible, frustrating, events reviewed. By the use of interviews, contemporary written material, and the authors' own commonsense perspective, both high level decisions and the situation of the harassed G.I. are investigated. Mark Clark, target of criticism for his "arrogance," his brashness, nonetheless in retrospect, is declared "unsophisticated. . . avid for publicity, (but) a commander who did everything that could have been done under the circumstances." The Goat of Anzio, General Lucas, under heavy attack since for his holding, rather than pursuing, tactic on the beachhead, performed reliably without contradicting directives. Lucas was not a Patton, and should not have been expected to wage that kind of campaign. The authors also soberly assess the rumors concerning Vatican politics, and accept the calmer view of Pope Pius as dedicated to the preservation of the Vatican, hardly favoring the Germans but realistically appraising the limitations of papal influence. A lively account of a remarkable collection of human beings under fire. A first rate reconstruction. Presumed first Bantam Edition, first printing. …
