C'est un de ces savants aux immenses connaissances mais à la modestie et à l'enthousiasme convaincants. Tous les textes présentés ici pourraient r…elever de cette exergue : les mots dans l'histoire de la langue. Car c'est d'abord de la langue française et de ses pouvoirs qu'il s'agit, même s'il est question de la "nature", de "l'homme", de la "vie sociale", et des "activités humaines", pour reprendre les titres des diverses parties. En effet, d'autres grands chapitres abordent cette immense question du rapport entre "les mots et les choses", ou bien envisagent ces mots essentiels, plus subtils que les noms, que sont les "verbes et adjectifs". Enfin, indépendamment de tel ou tel mot, les "faits de prononciation et de grammaire" ne sont pas oubliés. L'ouvrage de Georges Gougenheim constitue ainsi, plus que le glossaire que révèlent ses index, une réflexion sur le monde de relations entre les formes de la langue française et leurs valeurs, leurs sens, leurs emplois "à travers l'histoire". Parmi les paroles et les écrits qui illustrent ces relations, où la sémantique s'incarne grâce à la grammaire, Gougenheim a privilégié la plus grande littérature, montrant ainsi que la leçon de Molière, Racine, La Fontaine, Voltaire, celle des oeuvres plus anciennes - du Moyen Age à Rabelais ou à Montaigne - n'est pas seulement la leçon du style, de la sensibilité et de la pensée, mais celle du grand contexte culturel qui donne du sens au passé, pour le temps présent.
