Es ist kein normales Spiel, sondern ein grausamer Kampf, der nur vom Rücksichtslosesten gewonnen werden kann. Die Handlung der Novelle entwickelt sich während des Spiels als innerer Monolog des Haupthelden, eines Journalisten. Markov charakterisiert in dieser Novelle die Welt der sechziger Jahre in Bulgarien anhand eines Pokerspiels in einer hierorts kaum bekannten Vielschichtigkeit. Er überzeugt mit der Parallelführung von Kartenspiel und Auftragsschreiben, indem er den oft gelenkten Journalismus im Spiel mit gezinkten Karten spiegelt. Mit einfachen Mitteln entführt uns der Autor ins kommunistische Bulgarien, obwohl die Handlung auch anderswo im damaligen Osteuropa spielen konnte. Im Zentrum stehen die Abhängigkeiten, die als solche nicht angesprochen werden, sowie die psychischen Abgrunde der Beteiligten, die beim Versuch, einen der Mitspieler vollkommen zu zerstören und ihn finanziell zu ruinieren, alle Register von Hinterhältigkeit und planmäßiger Intrige offenlegen. Das Pokerspiel ist nur eine Rahmenhandlung. Hier wie »draußen« sind nicht Regeln ausschlaggebend, sondern die Taktik, zunehmend tun sich Abgrunde auf, die Charaktere treten hervor genau wie die Hintergrunde für menschliche Verhaltensmuster und am Ende des Spiels offenbaren sich kaum zu überbietende abgrundtiefe menschliche Seiten. Wie Stefan Zweig mit der Schachnovelle gelingt Georgi Markov, der für seine präzise Ausleuchtung des menschlichen Seins mit dem Leben bezahlen musste, ein grösser Wurf der Literatur. Der bulgarische Geheimdienst hat ihn vor 30 Jahren in London meuchlings umgebracht. Dieser Mord ging als der »Regenschirmmord« in die Geschichte ein.
