Die bekannten konventionellen Fleischlieferanten in diesen Gebieten sind Rinder, Ziegen und…Schafe. Das Kamel wurde wegen der Trockenheit, als Transporttier und für andere Zwecke gehalten. Das Kamel ist ein spezielles Tier, das sich nachweislich gut an eine solch raue Umgebung anpassen und auf sandigem Gelände mit spärlicher Vegetation gut überleben kann und hauptsächlich Futtermittel verzehrt, die von anderen Haustierarten nicht genutzt werden, um in den Trockengebieten zu vergleichsweise geringen Kosten Eiweiß zu produzieren. Der Vergleich von Kamelen mit den herkömmlichen Fleischquellen zeigte, dass Kamele eine gute Quelle für die Fleischversorgung in trockenen Gebieten sind, wobei Kamele und Rinder eine nahrhaftere Fleischquelle darstellen als Ziegen und Schafe. Diese Informationen könnten Forschern, Züchtern, Regierungsbehörden und Vermarktern als Leitfaden für die Entwicklung von Zuchtstrategien in der Sahelzone dienen, um das Potenzial des Kamels als gute Quelle für nahrhaftes Fleisch für die ständig wachsende Bevölkerung in der Sahelzone zu maximieren.
