The field of research on learning has become very complex, with different foci, founders and proponents, schools, and disciplinary approaches. This book is a first publication in the On the definition of learning network. The network arose out of the aspiration to study the phenomenon of learning in depth and to understand its complex relationship to empirical investigation and teaching. Based on the assumption that it is important to be sensitive to the variety of concepts and theories of learning in the field, and to continue to cultivate that variety, the book takes a step towards actively and critically engaging the various approaches in the field of learning theory. At the same time it emphasizes the complex relationships that exist between conceptualizations of learning and the empirical phenomenon of learning and teaching. It discusses how conceptualizations of learning are put to work in educational contexts and how the normative aspects of learning in relation to discussions of what is considered worth learning influence the formative processes of human development.

Bis zur Unabhängigkeit am 1. Oktober 1978 hieß das Territorium Ellice Islands. Tuvalu liegt im Südwesten des Pazifischen Ozeans, östlich von Papua-Neuguinea und nördlich von Neuseeland. Zu den umliegenden Inseln gehören die Salomonen, Nauru, Kiribati, Tokelau, Samoa, Wallis und Futuna, Fidschi und Vanuatu. (wiki) / . Die hier veröffentlichten Lieder sind repräsentative Beispiele der altpolynesischen Musik im Ellice-Archipel sowie ihrer Wandlung und weiteren Entwicklung bis in die Gegenwart. Sie wurden aus einer größeren Sammlung ausgewählt, die ich in den Jahren 1960/61 auf Niutao, Nanumanga und Nukufetau mit dem Tonbandgerät aufnehmen konnte. Die Reise war ermöglicht dank der Förderung durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft und die Staatlichen Museen (Museum für Völkerkunde) in Berlin. Ich habe jene Sammlung vor allem den alten Männern und Frauen dieser Inseln zu verdanken, besonders Tinilau, Salome, Kiuniu und Tetapo von Niutao, Ana und Lina von Nanumanga, Lili, Liva, Nukufetau, Tavita und Fakapelu von Nukufetau. Sie haben mir auch in langwierigen Sitzungen geduldig die Texte erläutert, zusammen mit Tevae, Tausi und Fetelika. Während die modernen Kirchenlieder der Inseln z. B. einen klar und leicht übersetzbaren Text nach europäischem Vorbild haben, ist die Lieddichtung der Alten sehr konzentriert, oft im "Telegrammstil" und symbolisch im Andeuten eines Vorganges. Zudem enthalten die alten Texte viele längst aus dem allgemeinen Gebrauch gekommene Wörter, an deren Sinn sich nur wenige noch zu erinnern vermögen, und schließlich sind auch Füllwörter ohne besondere Bedeutung nur zum Wohlklang beim Singen eingefügt worden.
