Der Künstler (*1966) ist der Sohn des Künstlers, Kunsthistorikers, -erziehers und Sammlers Franz Joseph van der Grinten, der zusammen mit seinem Bruder Hans zu den frühen Förderern von Joseph Beuys gehörte. Die Brüder organisierten auf dem elterlichen Bauernhof auch dessen frühe, legendäre sogenannte "Stall-Ausstellung".
