On 5.5 x 11 cm. slip of paper taken from letter. In fair condition, lightly aged. Closely-cropped, with the lower part of the final flourish of the 'z' in Ganz's name shaved off. Ganz established himself as accompanist to singers including Jenny Lind and Adelina Patti. He became sole conductor of rthe concerts of Henry Wylde's New Philharmonic Society orchestra in 1879, renaming them the following year 'Mr. Ganz's Orchestral Concerts'. He conducted the London premieres of Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique and Liszt's Dante symphony. He composed approximately 21 songs, 16 short works for solo piano, and 6 works for piano duet. His memoirs were published in 1913 as 'Memories of a Musician'.…

Splendid contemporary red leather binding, richly gilt on covers and spine, with undercut painting, gilt edges, green decorated endpapers, marbled wrappers, and slipcase. A richly personal Mendelssohn family album, created for Fanny Carus, the nine-year-old daughter of Ernst August and Agnes Carus, and distinguished by four autograph contributions of exceptional intimacy and variety by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy himself. - Begun by the composer in Leipzig on 19 March 1839, the album opens with his autograph presentation inscription on the title-page and continues with a separate poetic dedication after Goethe's "Reisesegen", its closing lines altered for the young recipient and further personalized in Mendelssohn's own hand. - Particularly appealing is the combination of literary, pictorial, and musical self-representation: alongside the poem stands a detailed signed pencil drawing of a fanciful monastery above a lake, dated 20 November 1843, and an autograph musical album leaf with the final six bars of the song "Im Herbst", op. 9 no. 5, with underlaid text after Karl Klingemann and a further autograph inscription dated Leipzig, 21 November 1843. These entries show Mendelssohn not only as composer but as cultivated participant in the sociable album culture of the German Biedermeier, where poetry, drawing, and music could converged in a single friendship memorial. The volume also preserves the wider intellectual circle around the Carus family, including contributions by Cécile Mendelssohn, Heinrich Conrad Schleinitz, Constanze née Röder, and other friends and teachers. - Well preserved throughout. - Sold through J. 4to. 4 pp. on bifolium. Via Carl Klingemann to the German Orientalist Friedrich Rosen (1805-1837) in London, sharing his observations on the cold and malicious nature of the Berliners. The composer laments about the way the denizens seem to make it a point to treat the artists poorly during performances: "On the Festival you already know the details from Klingemann; it has become one of our dearest recollections, and I think it is my best composition. A few weeks later the surgeon declared my knee to be completely cured, and I thought I would be leaving shortly, but then the bitter cold came and I postponed the journey and began a large work (a symphony for orchestra, on which I worked a lot every day; it isn't quite finished, but I hope I can finish it before my departure, as I have already begun the last movement. My illness surprised me a few days before my departure, I had already taken my leave and had started to pack; now I'll have to postpone that at least a fortnight longer, but then I think I can leave; my plan is to go from here via Weimar to Munich, then through the Tyrol to Vienna; from Vienna I intend to go to Venice and Upper Italy in the middle or toward the end of summer, and then I think I'll spend next winter in Rome and Naples, then in the spring, if it is permitted to spend so much time on a plan, go to Paris and then to London from time to time, where there may be much smoke and fog and great crowds and poverty, but where pretty nice people live, too, and where I wasn't so bad off for a year. The Festival is possibly the Grosse Festmusik zum Dareifest (Grand Festive Music for the Durer Celebration) of 1828. The Symphony may be the Fingal's Cave Overture written in 1830.
