Mikhail Aleksandrovich Vrubel (1856 - 1910) was a Russian painter and sculptor, renowned for his unique and avant-garde contributions to Symbolism and Art Nouveau. Vrubel's work is characterized by its mystical and fantastical elements, often drawing inspiration from Russian folklore, mythology, and literature. He is particularly known for his use of vivid colors, intricate patterns, and dramatic compositions. [From rear jacket flap] Michail Alexandrowitsch Wrubel (1856 - 1910) war ein Maler, dessen Kunst stets darauf gerichtet war, die Grundprobleme des Daseins zu begreifen, seine philosophischen Grundlagen aufzudecken und sich uber den Platz des Menschen in der Welt klar zu werden. Wrubel wollte die Monumentalmalerei wiederbeleben, zur Kunst der Renaissanceformen zuruck-kehren, die nervierende Vergeistigung seiner widerspruchsvollen Zeit mit dem tiefen Nachsinnen uber die ewigen Fragen von Gut, Bose und Wahrheit verbinden. Er suchte seine Anregungen in den Motiven der russischen Dichtung, in der Poesie der Romantik und der Antike, seine Bildhelden sind von den Werken Puschkins, Lermontows, Goethes und Anatole France' inspiriert. Er zollte dem Symbolismus und dem Jugendstil Tribut und hatte diesen Erscheinungen in Russland im wesentlichen den Antrieb gegeben, doch sein Schaffensbereich war unvergleichlich breiter und reicher. Die grossartigen Gestalten der "Damonen", schon und allmachtig, aber nicht imstande, in dieser von ihnen verschmahten Welt sich selbst zu finden, die gespensterhaften "Propheten", die das Gute und Weise verkorpern, und die glanzvollen, von tiefem Psychologismus und innerer Spannung erfullten Portrats, die in der nur allein fur Wrubel charakteristischen Manier gemalt sind,- einer Manier, die die Pinselstriche zu kristallischen, lichtstrahlenden Infloreszenzen verschmelzen lasst, - ergeben eine ganze Welt aussergewohnlichen seelischen Gluhens und leidenschaftlichen Strebens nach der letztlich doch nicht gefundenen hoheren Harmonie. Von standiger Unzufriedenheit gequalt, hat Wrubel sein grandioses Hauptwerk, von dem er sein ganzes Leben lang traumte, nicht geschaffen, aber sein Weg auf der Suche nach dem geistigen Absoluten bescherte der Welt viele erstaunliche Bilder, die sich hier erstmalig dem auslandischen Leser darbieten und die es gestatten, den herausragenden und ganz exklusiven Platz zu wurdigen, den Wrubel in der Weltkultur der Jahrhundertwende einnimmt. Den Bildband verfaßte der Doktor der Kunstwissenschaften Michail German.
