Aan het begin van de Nederlandse letterkunde staat het verhaal van een boekverbranding. Een Ierse abt, Brandaan, ontvangt een boek met merkwaardige natuurverschijnselen, maar vindt het zo ongeloofwaa…rdig dat hij het in het vuur werpt. Een engel beveelt hem vervolgens om een schip te bouwen en met tachtig monniken op een negenjarige reis te gaan. Tijdens deze reis ontmoet hij vreemde zaken zoals zeemonsters, een vis met een woud op zijn rug en een wereld op de zeebodem. Hij bezoekt zowel paradijselijke als helse oorden, spreekt met kluizenaars en duivels, en ontmoet de Walseranden, gedrochtelijke wezens van verheven afkomst. Na zijn ongeloof te hebben overwonnen, keert Brandaan terug naar zijn klooster, waar hij zijn ervaringen optekent in een boek. Het verhaal van zijn avonturen is vastgelegd in een gedicht dat waarschijnlijk rond de twaalfde eeuw in het Rijnland ontstond en in een Middelnederlandse versie bewaard is gebleven in twee handschriften uit circa 1400. Willem Wilmink heeft de Reis van Sint Brandaan prachtig vertaald in eenvoudige verzen, met aantekeningen die toelichting bieden bij moeilijke passages. Naast Wilminks vertaling is de oorspronkelijke tekst opgenomen, met woordverklaringen. In de inleiding plaatst W.P. Gerritsen het gedicht in de context van de twaalfde-eeuwse cultuur, waardoor deze boeiende tekst opnieuw toegankelijk wordt voor een breed publiek.
