Es thematisiert die sozialen Mechanismen und narrativen Muster, die aus der »grundlosen« Gewalt Sinn und Bedeutung schöpfen. Die Studie folgt daher einem konstruktivistischen Paradigma. Ihr Ziel ist es nicht, einen Erklärungsversuch zu unternehmen, sondern die Debatte um Amokläufe selbst deutend zu verstehen, um aus den Ergebnissen Erkenntnisse in Bezug auf das Selbstverständnis der Gesellschaft zu gewinnen. Inhaltlich gliedert sich die Arbeit in drei Abschnitte. Aus einer historischen Perspektive wird der Ursprung des archaischen Amoklaufs im südostasiatischen Raum beleuchtet und mit den ersten modernen, als »Amokläufe« beschriebenen Ereignissen in Deutschland und Amerika verglichen. Den theoretischen Zugang bildet die Auseinandersetzung mit Phänomenen des Außerordentlichen: Ereignis und Erzählung, Gewalt und Überschreitung, Risiko und Solidarität. Von besonderer Bedeutung sind die Erkenntnis, dass es bislang wenig systematische Auseinandersetzungen mit dem Problem der Grund- und Sinnlosigkeit in der (Gewalt-)Soziologie gibt sowie Vorschläge, diesem Desiderat kultursoziologisch beizukommen. In der empirischen Analyse wird die printmediale Berichterstattung über die deutschen Amokläufe von Erfurt (2002) und Winnenden (2009) mit den Methoden der qualitativen Inhalts- und Narrationsanalyse untersucht. In den Debatten um rsachen und Motive, Schuld und Verantwortung sowie Sicherheit und Prävention zeigt sich, wie gerade das vermeintlich »Sinnlose« zur Sinnstiftung zwingt und das bedrohliche »Nichts« eine Überfülle an Bedeutung produziert.
