When HW first returned to Georgeham in October 1946 after…his breakup of this marriage he stayed for a short while with his friends Mike and Margery Mitchell in a villagenear HW's Field at Ox's Cross and the woods of nearby Spreacombe. At this point HW fell in love with Susan Connely, the sixteen-year-old step-daughter of his friend Malcolm Elwin, who was married to Eve Connely and living by courtesy of a friend at Underborough at Westward Ho! (It was Elwin who was the key to the Chronicle being published by Macdonald.) That potential 'Barleybright' relationship was, however, terminated very firmly by the Elwins (mainly by Eve) to HW's inevitable anguish. Susan plays an important role in The Gale of the World the final volume in the Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight. From the The Hugoe Matthews collection. Hugoe Matthews (1938-2011) was an authority on the Victorian novelist and nature writer Richard Jefferies, of whose works he created probably the finest collection in private hands. In collaboration with George Miller, Matthews wrote the definitive bibliography of Jefferies' works, published by Scolar Press in 1993 and served for many years as President of the Richard Jefferies Society. Light even fading to both spines, horizontal scuff lines across mid-aspect of Vol. 1 (front and rear covers) and Vol. 2 (rear cover). Small ex-libris on front pastedown of Vol. 1. Text blocks square and firm, all hinges intact. Interior pages sharp - bright and white, free of toning and foxing aside from one or two faint spots on a handful of pages. Slipcase has light scuffing in scattered areas but all edges are intact, all corners sharp._____DISCUSSION: This is one of the high points of the Cresset Press, a monumental edition for several reasons. First, the letterpress printing is exceptional. Bernard Newdigate and the Shakespeare Head Press were arguably the most important and finest private press in the United Kingdom between the wars. The Kelmscott Batchelor's hand-made paper speaks for itself. Finally, the ten wood engravings by Blair Hughes-Stanton and Gertrude Hermes are dramatic, expressionistic and technically superb, made by two of the finest wood-engravers of the twentieth century. This two-volume set would be prohibitively expensive to make today and it is well priced for what it is. _____NOTE: Domestic shipping with USPS media mail is $20.
