Almeno d…al 1744 il Martorelli fu chiamato dal cappellano maggiore a esercitare l'attività di regio revisore dei manoscritti di opere letterarie destinate alla stampa e di scritti ecclesiastici. La casuale scoperta nel 1745 di un vasetto ottagonale di bronzo nelle campagne di Terlizzi, in Puglia, costitu indirettamente una svolta nella sua vicenda umana e culturale. Nel contenitore di unguenti il M. credette di riconoscere un antico calamaio e trovò modo di scriverne oltre ottocento pagine di erudizione antiquaria, poderosi prolegomeni e dettagliatissime annotazioni tese a retrodatare l'utilizzo di penne e calamai agli antichi ebrei, egiziani, greci e latini. L'opera, De regia theca calamaria (Napoli 1756), lungi dall'aprirgli le porte della prestigiosa Reale Accademia Ercolanese, suscitò aspre reazioni. Il governo napoletano ne proib la diffusione, con l'accusa rivolta all'autore di aver rivelato notizie riservate sulle scoperte in atto a Ercolano. Stroncando tutte le iniziative editoriali mirate a diffondere in anticipo, rispetto ai piani governativi, le conoscenze sulla straordinaria scoperta archeologica, la corte e il ministro Bernardo Tanucci perseguivano un preciso progetto politico volto a consolidare il mito del giovane nuovo sovrano e della sua ®missione provvidenziale.
