Giancarlo Passeroni nacque a Nizza ma ben presto si trasferì a Milano. Fu apprezzato poeta e sacerdote: «Modesto e caritatevole, visse poveramente, rifiutando doni e onori, confortato d'amicizie illustri, ammirato e stimato per la sua vita esemplare» (Enciclopedia Treccani). La sua opera principale, «Il Cicerone», fu apprezzata da Rousseau e Sterne.
