La periferia di oggi è ben altro che il bordo della città, è la parte più importante del territorio, il crogiuolo di fusione ove noi e i nostri prodotti veniamo gettati ad incontrarci con gli Enti della Natura: è il vero cuore pulsante della nostra civiltà, l'immagine e il destino di questa. Diciamo pure che le città vere, oggi, non sono i loro centri ma le loro periferie. Il Parco è il magazzino di tutte le nostre immaginazioni di enti "veri": gli edifici d'arte, l'archeologia, gli alberi secolari, i prati, i fiori. Degli enti che sono tali perché non prodotti da noi, non marchiati dalla nostra scia urbana. Quando oggi facciamo un parco questo è - al massimo - periferia. Il "buon" progetto non è il "bel" progetto, il bel sogno anche se mirabilmente organizzato ma solo il sogno più vicino alla realizzabilità - che non è poi che il massimo di realtà concretamente desiderabile date le condizioni che esse, realtà, pone. Il buon progetto è il più organico dei progetti realizzabili: il "bel" progetto (nel senso detto sopra) è dilettantesco, poco serio, profondamente inutile e quindi un dannoso perditempo. Il "bell'ambiente" (la foresta intatta ed originaria, la piramide alimentare infinita e completa) è la controparte del "bel progetto", l'immaginazione di tutto quello che il bel progetto minaccia di ferire. La coppia di immaginazioni, oggi, viene persecutoriamente esibita per tenere in piedi il cadavere dello stato di cose e di poteri vecchio (di quarant'anni) e nascondere la vista dei lineamenti (molto vigorosi) dello stato nuovo. Ma l'ambiente vero esiste, è la metà di noi esterna a noi ed è aperto all'architetto (perché non c'è ambiente senza un progetto né progetto senza ambiente, ed il progetto è la vita dell'uomo. La verità del progetto è l'architettura). Il progetto di fattibilità del Parco di Tor Sapienza a Roma, che muove da queste posizioni, sta al centro di un triangolo che ha per vertici Martin Heidegger, Saverio Muratori e Ian Mc Harg. Riguarda 216 ettari della periferia romana orientale, è georeferenziato, discretizzato, costituito in G.I.S. - cioè al massimo dell'esattezza, anche nei costi. I suoi lineamenti maggiori sono l'"idea" di periferia, valutata come lo stato reale di noi uomini di oggi, che ci portiamo dietro come odore umano di fondo, e il metodo logico-formale che è anche strumento di calcolo. È profondamente nuovo o, meglio, innovatico, ma anche antichissimo, perché ritorna alla evidente realtà delle cose. Book.

This first volume is numbered 1-64. Second volume begins on page 65 and goes to 128. Third volume runs pages 129-192. First page of text in the first volume begins with 'Memoria: Del Dottor G. Giannini al Comitato Governativo della Repubblica Cisalpina, sulla necessita di propagare tra noi il Vajuolo Vaccino.' This essay continues with header 'Vaccino' to page 27. Then, with only a line break to separate them, the next piece is 'Spervienze sull'influenza della luce in alcuni vegetabili; dell Citt. Decandolle.' Then on page 32 begins 'Invenzioni, scoperte et altre notizie letterairie, sisiche ecc. dell'Anno 1800.' This section runs through the end of this volume and into the next, ending on page 69. Then: Memoria sulla Tigna dell palpebra, di Francesco Buzzi, Oculista. pages 70-78. Then a letter by Dr. Giannini to Dr. Beretta. pages 78-116. Then a letter on Vaccination by Dr. Colladon, 117-136. Text entirely in Italian. The final volume ends mid-sentence in the middle of an essay by Giannini. Very early essays on Smallpox Vaccinations, as well as other medical notes. Dr. Giannini was responsible for a massive effort to inoculate people for smallpox in north central Italy (Lombardy) at this time. The cowpox vaccine was only introduced in 1796; these essays represent the cutting edge of public health technology and activism at the time. A scarce and important collection. This volume comes from the collection of Dr. Thomas Lovejoy, who was a passionate book collector as well as a renowned biologist.
