La curiosità ha spinto Pietro Giannini e Biagio Virgilio a rivedere criticamente e a tradurre in italiano (in due Appendici Documentarie) dei testi che sinora erano noti solo nella loro originaria redazione latina: la bolla di Bonifacio IX del 1391 e la pergamena di Giovanni Antonio Del Balzo Orsini del 1449, che ingloba al suo interno i privilegi di Raimondo Del Balzo del 1355 e di Nicola Orsini del 1375. Le prime prendono spunto dal rilievo attribuito, nel trattato di metrica greca di Gentili e Lomiento, ai metri kat'enoplion (hemiepe, reiziani, prosodiaci, enopli) ed alla loro vitalità nella storia delle forme metriche arcaiche. La tradizione antica assegna ai prosodiaci (e quindi alle forme connesse degli hemiepe, dei reiziani e degli enopli) una natura ionico-coriambica e non dattilico-anapestica. Il riconoscimento della loro presenza nei nuclei costitutivi dell'esametro ha consentito di definire la natura 'mutante' del verso che, nel corso della sua preistoria, è passato da libere forme 'prosodiache' ad una misura rigorosamente dattilico-anapestica. Il passaggio dell'esametro da forme libere a forme regolate ha comportato anche fenomeni di allungamento di sillabe, che sono oggetto di ulteriori capitoli. La parte pindarica è un prodotto collaterale delle ricerche effettuate per il commento delle Olimpiche 6, 7, 8 e 9, nell'ambito della edizione commentata delle Olimpiche appena stampata per la 'Fondazione Lorenzo Valla'. Sono pubblicate qui alcune osservazioni che integrano in qualche modo le notizie date o che, nei casi controversi, esprimono altri possibili punti di vista.
