Ein pragender Abschnitt seiner Karriere ist die Zeit in Frankfurt am Main, wo er mit bedeutenden Regisseuren wie Ruth Berghaus und Harry Kupfer kooperiert und die ,Ara Gielen" (1977-87) pragt. Gielen verehrt Bach, Beethoven und Mahler und hat viele moderne Komponisten bekannt gemacht. Er scheut sich nicht, unbequeme Wahrheiten auszusprechen und aussert sich direkt uber Kollegen. Fur ihn ist Musik ein Angebot an die Horerschaft, der Wahrheit zu begegnen, die nicht immer angenehm ist. Gielen gilt als einer der grossen Dirigenten seiner Zeit, als weltweit anerkannter Interpret und geschatzter Komponist, der Offenheit und Mut zur direkten Ausserung in seinen Erinnerungen zeigt.

Die Zusammenarbeit mit Ruth Berghaus, Hans Neuenfels, Jürgen Flimm, Harry Kupfer und Volker Schlöndorff, die die »Ära Gielen« (1977 87) begründet, wird für ihn selbst zum »zentralen Ereignis«. Bach, Beethoven und Mahler huldigt er als den ganz Großen, und viele der modernen Komponisten hat er bekannt gemacht. Angst vor unbequemen Wahrheiten hat Gielen nie gekannt, und direkt und ungeschminkt sind auch die Urteile, die er über Kollegen fällt. Musik ist für ihn das Angebot an eine wache Hörerschaft, »der Wahrheit zu begegnen. Und die ist nicht immer angenehm.« Michael Gielen ist einer der großen Dirigenten unserer Zeit.
