Discolouration to cover margins (see picture). ; 18 x 11.6 x 1.3 cms; 207 pages; Pierre de L'Estoile (15461611) was a French diarist, collector, and civil servant who is best known for his detailed and often colourful chronicles of life in late 16th and early 17th-century Paris. A loyal subject of Henri IV and a moderate Catholic, L'Estoile worked as a notary and clerk in the Paris Parlement, giving him a front-row seat to the political and religious turmoil of the Wars of Religion. His extensive personal journals, later known as the Mémoires-Journaux, record not only major historical events but also everyday rumours, pamphlets, songs, and personal observations, offering a vivid and sometimes gossipy portrait of the period. Though not intended for publication, his writings have become an invaluable resource for historians, preserving the atmosphere of a turbulent and transitional time in French history.
