Giles Henry Robertson FRSE RSA (1913-1987) was a British art historian and expert on the Italian Renaissance. At the end of the Second World War he joined the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program team (the "Monuments Men") to track art treasures hidden by the Nazis or looted by Allied troops. Late in 1946 he began lecturing in fine art history at Edinburgh University. He was promoted several times eventually holding the Watson Gordon Chair of Fine Art in 1972, remaining in this post until retirement in 1981. The book is sewn-bound in the original blue card covers with black titling on the front cover. The book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the covers and bumping to the corners and spine ends. The spine and about 1/2" of the spine edge of the rear cover is faded. The contents are secure and clean and the first page has been inscribed thus: "D.W.H. with best wishes from G.R. 9.XI.79" (D.W.H. refers to Prof. Dennis Harding). A few of the pages have neatly written corrections to the text, probably made by the author. Inscribed and Initialled by Au.
