The Library Edition of the British Poets was the title given to a 48-volume edition of the works of British poets, published between 1853 and 1860 by James Nichol of Edinburgh, edited, with lives of the authors, critical dissertations and explanatory notes, by the Rev. George Gilfillan. All the poets included were dead by the date of publication, and nearly all were born before 1770. The English Romantic poets were thus omitted from the collection. Publication took place in issues of six volumes, each issue costing one guinea by subscription. This complete set is in excellent condition. Cream vellum spines with brown leather titles insets and gilt lettering with green cloth. Page edge tops gilt. With a large but attractive vintage armorial bookplate in each volume. Some mild chipping to a few of the brown leather spine titles. Mild spine dustiness. Otherwise a very sharp and solid set that simply doesn't show its age! Spine and edges of boards browned; extremes lightly rubbed; very slight spotting to title and last page. Allibone's entry for Taylor is brief, but does refer to the 1864 2nd edition. This memoir of a minor Furness poet contains several references to the Ulverston and Lancaster railway, later the Furness Railway Company, for which the young Taylor worked. The literary remains include the prose piece 'Legend of Coniston Lake' and, amongst the poems, 'The Furness Rifle Volunteers'. The substantial alphabetical subscribers' list is then sub-listed according to the number of copies taken; multiples were ordered by many of the subscribers, peaking at 25 by Aaron Brown of Liverpool, and 20 by A. (Slightly rubbed, with a tiny patch of insect activity at head of rear cover). A very good copy in a very well preserved and neatly executed binding, signed "C. Cross Binder To The Queen". Another binding with the same signature, on a copy of Broderip's Leaves from the Notebook of a Naturalist, 1852, was item 434 in my catalogue of Particular Bindings [from the collection of John Collins] and is now in the British Library. Spawn and Kinsella, Ticketed Bookbindings from Nineteenth-Century Britain, 426, list a binder's stamp "Cross, Binders To the King", on a book dated 1892 from the E. P. Wormersley collection. This must have been bound after Edward VII became King in 1901. There are 117 books signed by Cross in the Royal Collections, most of them at Sandringham, the last dated c.1910. There is no entry for a C. Cross in Maurice Packer's Bookbinders of Victorian London.…
